It is good to see Securities Commission Malaysia continuing to publish the Corporate Governance Monitor which shows the annual progress made by Bursa-listed issuers in complying with the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance. Ongoing monitoring is important in identifying gaps in compliance and pointing the direction for future reforms. In my recent interview with retired independent director Tan Lye Huat, he expressed the view that the committee reviewing the Singapore capital market should do a stock-take of implementation of corporate governance practices in Singapore. I think the Malaysian approach of an annual report on compliance with the Code would be similarly useful for Singapore.

I am honoured to be invited to contribute an article sharing my perspective on progress in corporate governance in Malaysia and providing some suggestions for further improvements.
